Logistics
Covering the needs of a ship entails a lot more than selecting the chandler who will deliver on board the necessary food or stores at vessel’s next port of call.
There are times when shipowners have goods in their own facilities and others when they order directly from manufacturers. Ship’s routes don’t always include calls in ports close to these locations and in any case, the material needs to be on board as soon as possible (e.g., spare parts, original documents, specific medicines…)
In order for this to happen, there are several required procedures:
- Owners send the consignment (usually by air freight)
- The recipient arranges customs clearance to collect the packages
- The packages are transported to the place where they will be temporary stored
- An additional customs clearance is arranged at the port of supply
- The delivery on board takes place
